3.7% the Average Increase of the Inflation Rate for December 2018

The monthly report on inflation in Jordan issued by the Department of Statistics indicates that the Consumer Price Average (Inflation) reached 125.3 in December 2018 against 120.8 during the same month of 2017 recorded an increase by 3.7%. The main commodities groups, which contributed to this increase, were “Cereals and its products” by 1.25 percentage points “Transport” by 0.60 percentage points, “Tobacco and cigarettes” by 0.59 percentage points, “Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” 0.48 percentage points and “Dairy and its products and eggs” 0.31 percentage points. Meanwhile, the main commodities groups which witnessed a decrease in their prices were “Meat & poultry” by 0.50 percentage points, “ clothes” by 0.04 percentage points, “Fruits & nuts” by 0.02 percentage points and “Sugar and its products” by 0.01 percentage points.

The Consumer Price Average for December 2018 has decreased by 0.7% compared with the previous month (November) 2018. The main commodities groups which contributed to this decrease were “Transport” by 0.57 percentage points, “Fruits & nuts” 0.20 percentage points, “fuel and lighting” by 0.09 percentage points, “Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” by 0.06 percentage points and “Sugar and its products” by 0.01 percentage points. Meanwhile, the main groups which witnessed an increase in their prices were “Rents” by 0.09 percentage points, “Cereals and its products” by 0.07 percentage points, “Meat & poultry” by 0.06 percentage points and “Dairy and its products and eggs” by 0.01 percentage points.
The report also shows that the Consumer Price Average for 2018 has increased by 4.5% compared with the same period of 2017. The main commodities groups which contributed to this increase were “Transport” by 1.32 percentage points, “Cereals and their products” 1.04 percentage points , “Tobacco and cigarettes” by 0.64 percentage points, “Rents” by 0.41 percentage points and “fuel and lighting” by 0.39 percentage points. Meanwhile, the main commodities groups which witnessed a decrease in their prices were “Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” 0.07 percentage points and “clothes” 0.05 percentage points and “spices, food enhancers and other foods” and “Fruit & nuts” by 0.01 percentage points for each of them.

As for the core inflation of the consumer Price index for December 2018 (which is calculated after excluding the most fluctuating commodities’ prices of food, fuel , lighting and transport group) it has reached 129.4 against 127.3 recording an increase of 1.7% during the same month of 2017.On the annual level the consumer price index of 2018 reached 128.6 against 125.7 compared with 2017 representing a growth by 2.3%.
