3.6% the Average Increase of the Inflation Rate for February 2018

The monthly report on inflation in Jordan issued by the Department of Statistics indicates that the Consumer Price Average (Inflation) reached 123.5 in February 2018 against 119.1 during February 2017 recorded an increase by 3.6%.The main commodities groups, which contributed to this increase, were “Transport” 9.1% representing 1.2 percentage point “Cereals and its Products” 22.4% representing 1.1 percentage points, “Tobacco and cigarettes” 14.6% representing 0.6 percentage points,  “Rents” 2.9% representing 0.4 percentage point and “fuel and lighting” 5.9% representing 0.3 percentage point . Meanwhile, the main commodities groups which witnessed a decrease in their prices were “Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” 19.8%, “meat & poultry” 0.03% , “house utensils” 0.2% and “Yoghurt and its products and eggs” 0.01%.

The Consumer Price Average for February 2018 has increased by 1.5% compared with the previous month (Jan) 2018.The main commodities groups which contributed to this increase were “Cereals and its Products” 20.9% representing 1.0 percentage point, “Transport” 3.3%  representing 0.4 percentage point, “Yoghurt and its products and eggs” 3.6% representing 0.1 percentage points, “Restaurants and Hotels ” 7.1% representing 0.1 percentage points and “fuel and lighting” 1.6% representing 0.1  percentage points. Meanwhile, the main groups which witnessed a decrease in their prices were “Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” 4.9%,  “meat & poultry” 1.9%,“Fruits and Nuts” 1.5% and “House furnishings and carpets” 0.3%.

The report also shows that the Consumer Price Average for the first two months of 2018 has increased by 3.3% compared with the same period of 2017. The main commodities groups which contributed to this increase were “Transport” 8.9% representing 1.2 percentage points, Tobacco and cigarettes” by 17.9% representing 0.8 percentage points, “Cereals and their products” 12.0% representing 0.02 percentage points ,“Rents” 2.9% representing 0.4 percentage points and “fuel and lighting” 5.3% representing 0.3  percentage points. Meanwhile, the main commodities groups which witnessed a decrease in their prices were Vegetables, Dried and Canned Legumes” 14.4% , “Yoghurt and its products and eggs” 3.5% ,Fruits and nuts” 1.0% and “Clothes” 0.1%.

As for the core inflation of the consumer Price index for February 2018 (which is calculated after excluding the most fluctuating commodities’ prices of food, fuel , lighting and transport group) it has reached 127.8 against 124.8 recording an increase of 2.4% as compared with the same month of 2017.
