Agricultural census 2007

The Department of Statistics (DoS) has carried out the Sixth Agricultural Census in Jordan in 2007 for the agricultural season 2006 / 2007.

The First Agricultural Census was conducted in 1953, the second in 1965, the third in 1975, the fourth in 1983 and the fifth in 1997. It is recommended to implement the comprehensive agricultural census at regular intervals which allows provision of data that can be compared in stable sequence and also allows making highly accurate future estimates.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recommends conducting a comprehensive agricultural census every 10 years at the most. Accordingly, the Department of Statistics (DoS) has carried out the agricultural census in 2007, based on the General Statistics Law in this regard.

The Department of Statistics (DoS) began to use a new and sophisticated data collection and processing technique for the first time since its establishment in late 1949. The data were collected through an electronic rather than a paper questionnaire using handheld devices (PDA) that can reduce data errors, overcome coding and data entry errors in addition to rectifying any error or completion of data collected directly from the field.

This technique has the potential to monitor work progress continuously in addition to the possibility of publishing the results once the process of data collection is completed.
